I had the chance to have Devin Passariello, the drummer of The Bride Wore Black, answer a few questions for me. Luckily, the guys had some amazing things to say. Representing New York City, this group has an incredible amount of talent, along with the motivation and sound to match. It’s probable that you will fall in love with this band after first listen. Don’t take my word for it, though. Just ask their vast amounts of devoted fans.
Joining together in late 2006, Sam, Mike, Devin, and Sean began a group unlike any other, a group dedicated to getting their music out to as many ears as possible. Touring, recording, and an admirable work ethic has led the band to a multitude of success stories, including but not at all limited to shows with acts ranging from Metro Station to Forever the Sickest Kids. Two EP’s and hundreds of fans later, the band has shown no signs of slowing down. What’s more, the guys of The Bride Wore Black have stayed true to their loyal fan base, ensuring that all modes of communication, be it on myspace or at a show, are genuine and heartfelt.
Go to myspace.com/thebrideworeblack for information as to when they’re coming to your area. You’ll undoubtedly be hearing about them in the near future, wherever you are. I won’t hesitate to say I told you so.

Hey, whats new in the world of The Bride Wore Black?
Right now we’re on a short run with This Condition and The In Crowd. Aside from that we’ve just been playing one offs around the tri state area and writing new jams
You’re currently on tour with The In Crowd and This Condition. How’s it going for you all so far?
It’s going great! We played the first show in Allentown, PA last night and it ruled. The kids were awesome and we met The In Crowd for the first time. Luckily theyre an awesome bunch of dudes (and dudette). And This Condition…well, we have huge man crushes on those dudes. We’re stoked to get to hang for the next week with all those people.
Its not often that Queens is in the national music spotlight. What do you have to say about the New York music scene? Any shoutouts you’d like to make to any local bands or success stories out of Queens?
BIG UPS TO EMMURE! Those are our dudes, and we’re super stoked on all the success theyve been seeing lately. The scene in Queens is pretty dead though unfortunately. That’s why we rarely play in Queens. There’s absolutely NO PLACE to play. We hope that changes soon though!
Describe the band van in four words.
Smelly, Dirty, Sticky (thanks to melted sour patch kids and sweedish fish all over the floor), Red (sorry, I had nothing else haha)
Any individual music guilty pleasures?
We take pride in everything we listen to. There are no guilty pleasures in this band.
If you could choose anyone to go around the world with on a tour of epic proportions, who would you pick?
New Found Glory. Hands down, NFG.
What’s the first word that comes to mind when you think of TBWB?
Party.
You guys are incredibly lucky to have such amazing sponsors. How often do you rock that gear?
Everyday! We love our sponsors! Especially Passion Brand. Greatest company ever!
You have a choice for a celebrity guest cameo appearance in one of your music videos. Who do you choose: Ludacris, Eminem, or Diddy?
Eminem without a doubt!
Whats the biggest compliment you’ve ever gotten on your music. How about one thing that you have received at a show before, and would never want to get again?
I’d say the biggest compliment was when someone told us that they were having a shitty day and our record made everything better for them. To effect someone in that way is incredible, and it certainly made us feel amazing to hear that. In terms of things we’ve gotten that we’d never want again…I dont think I have an answer for that. When people bring us things they always rule and we love whatever it is! Unless its a snake. Please don’t ever bring us a snake. That would suck.
What’s one thing that TBWB takes the most pride in regarding the music?
I’d say it’s our sound. We always try to sound like The Bride Wore Black and nobody else. There’s definitely bands that you could compare us to, but I dont think there’s a band out there that you could say we sound exactly like. We do our best to never sound like a band that rips of another band, ya know?
Life on the road can be hectic. What keeps you guys sane while away from home?
Nothing. We’re actually completely insane. Out of our fucking minds insane. I wish that was a joke.
What has being in a band taught you that no college ever could?
I guess it would be how to survive being in a new place every day. Nothing can prepare you for the feeling you get not knowing where youre gonna end up sleeping at night, or when your next shower is going to come. You age much more quickly on the road then living a normal life at home.
Describe a typical TBWB show. What the best part about being on stage?
A typical TBWB show is insanity. We pretty much get on stage and run around acting like a bunch of assholes. It seems to entertain people. And entertaining people would have to be the best part about being on the stage.
Which of you have the most game?
I (Devin) am doing the interview, so regardless of whether it’s the truth or not, I have the best game. Fuck the rest of those non game havin’ mooks.
Your album, Leaving Quespin, is an incredible mix of happy hardcore hardcore, powerpop, and pop punk. On top of that, you have some noteworthy song titles. How do you come up with those?
Haha the song title selection is my favorite part of the process of making a TBWB record. We basically think of the most ridiculous shit we can think of, write it on the wall, and then go through rounds of voting to pick the best ones. Quite a few of our song titles come from either movie quotes or pop culture. Like, “We’ll Do It Live!” is from the video of Bill O’Reilly flipping out. And “I’ve Got The Wings of a Dove” is a Tony Clifton quote from the movie Man on the Moon.
You’ve gotten the chance to play with some amazing artists, ranging from FTSK to We The Kings. Can you give us a favorite show memory?
Actually, one of my favorite show memories wasnt from a show that we played with a big national act. It’s from our cd release show in The Bronx this passed June. Like, 300 kids came out and went absolutely apeshit. It was unreal to watch from the stage. Boogie down Bronx knows how to bring the mosh.
You guys spend a ton of time out on the road and connecting with fans. How would you describe the impact of that in conjunction with social networking sites, such as Myspace, Purevolume, Twitter, Stickam, etc.?
Nothing compares to a face to face connection. Yea, myspace and twitter and stickam are all cool cause we run them ourselves so when someone connects with us through one of those networks, they really are connecting with us. But it’s just not the same as hanging out with people at a show. We prefer meeting people in real life rather then having them comment us on myspace or @replying us on twitter. Not saying we dont like the contact we get through social networking sites, we love it. But the connection of having a real conversation with a real person in real life is that much more awesome.
Where do you see yourselves 60 years from now? Still rocking hard, or rocking a walker?
Given the fact that I smoke like a chimney, drink like a fish, and eat way too much red meat, I’ll be lucky to be alive in 60 years haha.
What can the world expect from The Bride Wore Black this year? Next year?
The rest of this year will pretty much be spent playing shows in or around our area and writing new songs. We’re hoping to hit the road hard starting in late winter/early spring, and definitely want to have some new music for everyone to hear. Just stick with us. We love you guys!
Thank you to Devin and The Bride Wore Black for contributing to the efforts of For Your Scene to raise funds for Sweet Relief Music Fund. Their interview has raised $22 towards assistance to the fund.
