Interview and Review by Ella Goldsmith (www.twitter.com/ella_goldsmith)

If you think that New Jersey is all about smog, erratic driving, and the Jersey Shore as depicted by MTV, you are sadly mistaken. In reality, the garden state is a haven of musical talent and a thriving music scene, equipped with something for every listener. Nobody has represented this array of talent as well as Cash Cash, a powerpop/techno band from Roseland. Colorful fashions and flawless hair aside, the band has proved to be a brute force in the powerpop movement with a full-length album capable of making you shake whatever you’ve got. This could prove to be embarrassing or entertaining for you, but either way it is impossible to deny the feel-goodness that Cash Cash brings to the musical table.
To say Cash Cash is a typical powerpop band with that “party sound” would be sinful. The band is, in fact, multiple genres. This can be seen throughout the band’s debut full length, “Take it to the Floor” (Universal Records), wherein each song produces a new sound and takes on a completely new form.

Aside from their creative abilities, the band has something else to be incredibly envious of: stage presence. “After seeing them once, I felt obligated to see them again”, said an attendee of The Bamboozle Festival in New Jersey last summer, where the band brought one of the most energetic (yet musically on-point) performances of the day. Certainly, the band has grown since their original conception in 2002 as “The Consequence”. They are anything but a quintessential success story, having grasped what it takes to be in a group, be successful, and all of the hardships that come with it. They have also reaped the many benefits of doing what you love, and that’s definitely something to be admired.

The band has some great things coming your way, but to find out exactly what…you’re going to have to read on ;)

Hey guys. So you guys represent New Jersey, a state with countless bands of
all genres. What’s the best part about Jersey and its music scene? What do you have to say to the haters out there?

New Jersey is one of best states in the country!!! We are super proud
of it! I mean come on…Bon Jovi, The Boss….what more do you need to
know? It must be something in our water….:-) I think we have such a
kickin’ music scene because there’s a lot of good venues to play. What
makes a big part of the NJ music are all the small shows like theVFW
hall/basement shows, it makes it super easy to get in front of an
audience when you’re first starting off as a band. Other than our music
scene being awesome, we have the jersey shore which is amazing!! It’s a
love hate thing…just go spend a summer down there and you’ll be
changed forever! :-)

The Cash Cash style is in one word: colorful. How would each of you
describe your individual stage style in one word?

Hmm one word you say?
Jean Paul - Super-Fly
Alex - Pretty
Sam - Simple
Anthony - Curls

How did the band get started? Any preliminary band names before “Cash
Cash”?

Sam and I got started really early in elementary school playing talent
shows and street fairs. We had a couple pop punk bands in jr high and
then formed the power pop band The Consequence in high school. Then my
brother joined up with us and brought Anthony along. We took The
Consequence through college doing short tours, and writing/recording 3
cds in our basement. Then after we got signed we changed our name to
Cash Cash because a rapper already had the legal rights to the
name…so it kinda bummed us out at first but then it all kinda just
made sense and now it feels right!

Describe your dream show (creativity is encouraged).

Goo Goo Dolls
Celine Dion
Britney Spears
Daft Punk
Jimmy Eat World
Nirvana

It’s almost impossible to put you guys in one genre. how would you describe the Cash Cash sound?
We kinda fit into the dancy/remix style/electro scene but at the same
time are writing simple sing along songs that are filled with hooks. We
fit in with bands like Metro Station, Cobra Starship, 3oh3 but have our
own twist on it.

If you could travel the world in support of one solo artist right now
on a 12 week tour, who would it be?

Hmmm, I would probably have to pick Gwen Stefani, Lady Ga Ga, or Katy Perry!

What’s the band’s writing process like?
“Take It To The Floor” is a really diverse album, with songs ranging
from dance-worth like “Breakout” to more experimental-sounding ones
like “Concerta”. Do you have a favorite song off the cd?
The cd is like an accumulation of the last 10 years….we wrote a lot
of the songs in college and kinda just gathered all the ideas we ever
had and made the album. That’s why it’s as diverse as it is. If I had
to pick out some fav tracks off it besides Party In Your Bedroom I
would go with Sugar Rush, Radio, and Dynamite.

Describe your fans in 7 words or less.
Amazing, loyal, sweet, giving, crazy fun, energetic

You guys are fortunate to have an amazing team, including some
fabulous publicists. How is Audio Crush treating you?

We are lucky to have a really solid team behind us. Our management, Ozone
Entertainment, has helped us organize our success and keep us very
productive while our record label Universal Republic Records has opened
many doors for us getting our music out there and heard. Our booking
agents have been very helpful in keeping us busy and on the road. We
just started working with Audio Crush PR and it’s been a great
experience so far. They do a great job with pr and setting up marketing
strategies/promotion for us.

If Cash Cash were an ice cream flavor, what would it be?
Hahah ahh probably Ben and Jerry’s Neapolitan Dynamite. It’s like a
cross/split of Half Baked and Cherry Garcia! Ahh yummmy!

What’s the hardest part about being in a band?
The hardest part for me at least is definitely all the traveling… It
has it’s up and downs. It’s awesome that we get
to see the country and experience so many different sides to it but
sometimes it gets hard living an up and go lifestyle. It wears on your
mind and body…I feel like there needs to be a good balance between
that and living a normal life or else bands just go insane.

Was it clear to you guys from the start that music was in your future,
or is your success somewhat of a surprise?

I knew music was for me after I picked up the guitar in 5th grade. It
just felt right. It felt like i filled a hole in my life that was just
destined to be filled with music. I know as long as I’m doing something
involving music I’ll be happy. We love so many sides of it too and
don’t just limit ourselves to being in a band. We produced and recorded
a lot of our record and still do a lot of the
recording/production/mixing ourselves. We’ve been lucky to work with
Cobra Starship on a bunch of remixes which was an awesome experience.
So who knows what else we’ll get our hands into in the future! Any
hidden talents?
Sam and Alex are super good at juggling!! haha just ask em to do it a a
show!! Alex can also turn into a robot which is really sweet!

Embarrass one of the band members for us. Any specific funny story from tour?
haha Sam trips on stage all the time. He’s the most clumsy kid on the
planet! He fell on his ass out our NY show last winter and just fell
last night in Long Island on the EZ BRONZ tour!! Best compliment ever
received thus far?
A girl once told me she would die for me…which was kinda weird and a
little creepy but yeh..:-/ I told her I’d rather her live for me
instead! Haha.

Any plans for 2010 you can tell us about? New album, maybe?
We’re gonna be home for winter so well be writing/recording a lot of
new stuff. Not sure as to what were gonna do with it…possibly an EP
or a few singles, tour ep, or maybe dvd or deluxe album…once we have
stuff recorded and we get closer to that time well have a better idea! It’ll be nice to be home with our families for a bit and we’re
excited to get some new music out there. It’s been almost a year since
our cd so it feels right to be working on new songs!
So keep checking www.myspace.com/cashcash for updates!!
